Auguste Lu (Augustė Lubickaitė) is a contemporary artist from Klaipėda, Lithuania, based in Yokohama, Japan.
Her fluid, atmospherically layered paintings ask what we miss while we are living it: the contradictions we carry within ourselves, the ordinary moments that were never recorded, the inner rhythm swept away by the world’s pace. With a foundation in classical music and fine art, musical structure shapes the composition and questions of her work as much as visual instinct.
Working on the floor, she paints with her hands, letting water and acrylic ink respond to the movement of her body before she draws back into the surface with charcoal and pastel.
Rooted in movement between cultures, her paintings carry both the mist of the Lithuanian countryside and the clear negative space of Japanese aesthetics. The result is abstraction that feels elemental: quiet yet charged, open yet precise. Its atmospheric language is not a stylistic choice; it is what allows the viewer’s own memory to enter.
Her work has been shown in solo exhibitions in Tokyo, Yokohama and Nagoya, including at the Frederick Harris Gallery, Tokyo American Club. She represented Lithuania at Pre-Expo Kyoto.
