Auguste Lu: Among Stillness and Breath

Lithuanian-born contemporary artist Auguste Lu, now based in Japan, presents a new body of work exploring the quiet space between movement and stillness. Following earlier exhibitions that examined emotional tension, this exhibition turns inward, focusing on presence, breath, and subtle transformation.

Originally trained as a classical pianist, Auguste approaches painting with a strong sensitivity to rhythm, timing, and pause. This musical foundation continues to shape her visual language, where gestures unfold gradually, and silence becomes an active element within the composition.

Working with fluid acrylics, water, and mineral pigments, Auguste allows gravity and time to shape each composition. Layers spread, settle, and evaporate, leaving behind traces of motion that feel both spontaneous and deliberate. Her practice draws inspiration from Japanese aesthetics such as emptiness, rhythm, and restraint, while remaining rooted in expressive European abstraction.

Among Stillness and Breath invites visitors into a contemplative environment where paintings function less as objects and more as atmospheres. The works emphasize moments where form appears, softens, and disappears — encouraging visitors to slow down and look into the paintings as if through windows, each one opening onto something larger than its frame.

Opening Reception & Live Performance

During the opening reception, the gallery will transform into a temporary performance stage, where visual art and live expression converge.

A special one-night-only performance titled “Among Stillness and Breath” will feature:

Miho Kiba — twenty-five-string koto
Aone Morisawa — body expression

Set against the backdrop of Auguste Lu’s paintings, the performance explores the tension between silence and motion, stillness and emergence. Through sound, gesture, and spatial presence, the gallery itself becomes a living composition.
